Contest Pays Off

Earlier this summer, I entered a photo in the Metro Parks “There’s a Park for That” contest. It was a pic from a shoot in May 2009 with my daughter and two of her friends, in front of the fountain at Lakeview Park at night. I found out it won when I drove by Lakeview one evening after work and saw it displayed on a banner in front of the park. A few weeks later, I was contacted and asked if the girls in the shot would be able to appear in a commercial for the MetroParks system. Needless to say, the girls were excited, as was I. (I think I was more tickled than the girls!!) Recently, the commercial editing was completed, and it was uploaded to YouTube, as well as getting airtime on Animal Planet and a few TimeWarner channels. I thought I’d share it here where it first appeared.

Firewalkin’

Firewalking is the act of walking barefoot over a bed of hot embers or stones. Firewalking has been practiced by many people and cultures in all parts of the world. It is often used as a rite of passage, as a test of an individual’s strength and courage, or in religion as a test of one’s faith. Firewalking became popular in the twentieth century when author Tolly Burkan began giving public classes throughout the United States and Europe in an effort to demonstrate that the practice was not paranormal.Today, it is often used in corporate and team-building seminars and self-help workshops as a confidence-building exercise.

I’ll not name the organization, the speaker or the location. The photos I’ve used are such that the people can’t be identified. My intention for sharing is to show the night shots of the fire, and the path of the embers as the individual’s foot kicks them.

Back at it, Full Swing

I went weeks this summer without picking up the camera. Nothing to inspire me. The free portrait shoot I set up at Lakeview went bust. Not learning anything shooting sunsets and the Lighthouse over and over. I bought a couple new filters, a UV and my neutral density filter arrived yesterday. But many days have passed in between posts, and I had zip that was really “new”. Suddenly, in the space of a week, I’m behind the 8-ball. I’ve got pics that need edited and watermarked from the zoo, a church in Elyria, more macro shots, and now the Fair. Went with Michael, Kristen and Colton last night. Kristen and I drove separately so we could stay late. She needed to try her hand at long exposures with the tripod. And she did a great job and had a ton of fun doing it. Me? Just a sample of what I shot last night.  Gotta get back to editing everything else. Feels good to be backed up.
